Chambolle-Musigny in depth

Allen Meadows, of Burghound renown and a world authority on Burgundy, continues his Master Class series of in-depth explorations of a single village. This time it’s Chambolle-Musigny, whose highly-sought-after wines come from one of the smallest appellation areas in the Côte de Nuits.

The scarcity of the wines produced in Chambolle makes it very difficult to have a real understanding of this famed village. There is simply no equivalent opportunity to immerse yourself in the spirit of one of the jewels of Burgundy. You will also benefit from the experience and knowledge of Becky Wasserman, her husband Russell Hone and her son Peter Wasserman during the course of the symposium.

We will spend four days and a half with Allen, exploring the premier and grand crus of Chambolle with wines from the best domaines producing these appellations. There will be vineyard visits, winery tastings, tutored vertical tastings and winemaker dinners. We will gain insight into the terroirs and discover the viti- and viniculture techniques which enable the winegrowers to express their unique sense of place.

A full exploration of an appellation demands tasting over multiple vintages and comparing varied interpretations from several domaines. We will do vertical tastings comparing Grand Cru Musigny and Premier Cru Amoureuses, a comparative horizontal of Bonnes Mares and a 12-vintage vertical of Chambolle-Musigny village from Frederick Mugnier.

To unravel and understand the geology underpinning the terroirs of Chambolle, we have time in the vineyards with geologist Françoise Vannier. To add the historical dimension, we will meet with local expert Charlotte Froment and discover how the village evolved into what it is today.

The participating domaines will include: Ghislaine Barthod, Amiot-Servelle, Comte de Vogüe, Georges Roumier with Christophe Roumier, Perot-Minot, Joseph Drouhin, Joseph Faiveley, Digioia Royer and up-and-coming domaine Felletig.
